Then about 1847, Jehu and his mother and four other children moved to New London in Howard County where Jehu's cousin, Dr. Moses R. Wickersham was publishing a newspaper. Cynthia, a daughter of Isaac and Nancy Bates, was born about 1832 in Indiana. Cynthia and Jehu lived in Howard County several years, then moved to Guthrie County, Iowa for a short time before settling in Ironton, Wisconsin about 1860.

He is reportedly buried at the National Cemetery at Atlanta. Jehu recorded his observations during his service in a dairy which is still in existence.
Nearly four years after Jehu's death, his widow, Cynthia, married William, C. Mullinix, son of Henry and Elizabeth Mullinix of Perry, Indiana on 25 December 1867, in Ironton. (William, a clergyman, officiated the wedding ceremony of his stepson, Howard, several years later.)
