Sergeant Henry Clay, Company D.


        Henry Clay, b. Oct. 28, 1833, farmer; m. in Kane Co., Ill., Nov. 26, 1858, Amila Adelia Franklin, b. in Chautauqua Co., N. Y., May 14, 1841. He m. 2d, Oct. 18, 1869, Esther J. Cooley, of Hatfield, Mass.; enlisted, Sept. 1861, in Co. D, 12th Wis. Inf.; was sergt.; followed rebel Gen. Price and Van Dorn for months; then in Tenn.; under Grant at siege Vicksburg; in 2d battle of Jackson; from there into La., Miss., and Ga.; then under Sherman in his campaign, from battle of Big Shantee until Atlanta was taken, and Sherman started for Savannah, when he was disch. He removed to Minn. 1865; res. Christiana, Dakota Co.; have: Carrie May,?? b. Apr. 9, 1862; Louisa Aola,9 b. Apr. 17, 1871.
