Minutes of The October 14 Meeting by Jeff Lipka
The meeting of October 14 was called to order
by President Bob Pitts. There were 72 members present. There were no guests.
A formal Treasurer’s Report was not submitted by Myrt Brandvold as she
had just returned from Norway. The September 1, total was $ 4602.56.
The editor indicated that he is Now sending out several different
email versions of the newsletter as members have various word processor
versions. The best place to read and download the newsletter is the Viking
website at http://www.russscott.com/~rscott/vwca/
The question of purchasing a digital camera for
approximately $200-300 was raised again. The camera would be used to place
images at the Viking website.There was considerable discusssion about the
idea. Concerns raised included: is it needed, who would use it, would it
be secure, how good would the images be, what is the best camera in this
price range, do members use computers and the internet. At the conclusion
two motions were passed. The combined motion that passed states that there
should be a committee to look at the question for 3 months to see if it
is a good idea, and if so,what should be purchased. Motion passed (65-7).
(No committee was set up at the meeting.)
Swede brought up the patch with Viking logo idea
again. Digitization would cost $312.00 according to one vendor. Someone
suggested it could be done for $150.00. There was discussion as to size
of the patch (3 or 4 inches) and what kind of items could be purchased.
Items suggested were caps, aprons, sweatshirts. A motion was made and approved
to have a committee purchase 50-3 inch patches with caps at an acceptable
cost. ( No committee was set up.) (Editor’s Notes: 1) In 1991, the Viking
Club ordered 100-3” and 200-4” size patches. Purchase cost was $640.20.
These were sold for $3 and $4, respectively. 2) MWCA purchases and sells
their logo to their members for $2.00.
Swede then circulated job lists seeking volunteers
for the October show. There will be a Viking info table and demonstrations.
The Carving for Charity program will also be set up. Thirteen members have
indicated they will donate carvings.

meeting was adjourned and Show and Tell commenced. After a short coffee
break, Ev Ellenwood made an excellent presentation on Casting Objects.

Editor’s Comments
I recently spent an evening reading Viking newsletters published in the 1990’s. The newsletters provide an opportunity to see the history of the club and to note the changes that have occurred. But there is a lot that remains the same. In the April 1994 newsletter the following description of a carver was provided by Edwin J. Wooloch.
WHO IS A WOOD CARVER?
A Wood Carver is a Person who is an Artist in three dimensions.
“A Designer” Because
the carving must be visualized while in the rough.
“An Engineer” Because of the
many tools, knives and chisels used.
“A Craftsman” To understand the many
grades of woods suitable for carving.
“A Doctor”
An inkling of Anatomy, so carvings will have form and beauty.
“A Painter”
For the proper finish to beautify and discourage aging.
“A Lover”
For the Love of your fellow wood carvers, who likewise share the companionship,
goodwill,
and accomplishments with each other.
A note of caution
Recently I have heard several comments about microwaving wood; to
dry or kill insects..
Excessive heating of the wood could result in warping (depends on
thickness of wood), or pose a fire hazard. Modest use of the Defrost
cycle for a period of 5-7 minutes at a low energy value is probably
acceptable. Does anyone have any guidelines for this method?
Recognition
Once again we had a successful Fall Show. Much of the success is due to the many hours of planning and arranging performed by Swede Bengtson. A show doesn’t just happen. Swede had to make numerous trips to the Mall to arrange for the site. Also there were numerous meetings with the Show Committee. Last, Dennis Schuster and he set up the “Carving for Charity” program. We did have a number of volunteers assist in the setting up, and removal of tables and chairs. But for the most part, the mechanics of arranging the Show rested on Swede’s shoulders. I do hope that you take time to let him know that you care.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for wood carving clubs to secure space at local malls. It would not surprise me if all malls were to eliminate shows of this kind. It is going to be very difficult to find a receptive mall due to their operational needs. So what will be our avenue for displaying our talents? We need to discuss this at a future meeting. But for now ------Thanks, Swede!
