Sir:
We have just concluded
the arduous campaign which has brought us from avannah, Ga to Goldsboro,
N.C. Our rejoicing over the success of the campaign is allayed with sorrow
for our losses. We were engaged in two severe actions, one the 16h inst.
near Averysboro, the other the 19th on the way. Hence to Goldsboro. I send
a list of all casualties of the campaign enclosed.
Among the killed are
Capt. Schmidt, Co. B and 1st Lieut. Rudolph Klein, Co. C, both very brave
and efficient officers. I have now only eight line officers present for
duty and to organize the regiment for the next campaign must request some
new appointments for which I beg leave to submit the following recommendations:
Actg. 1st Sergt. Frank
M. Friss as 1st Lieut Co. A. vice Juenger discharged.
1st Lieut. Peter Guttmann as Captain Co. B vice Schmidt killed,
there being no officer in Co. B and no non commissioned officer at all
fit for the position of captain.
1st Sergt. Julius Mueller as 1st Lieut. Co. C. vice Klein killed.
1st Sergt. Henry Elsner as 1st Lieut Co. D. vice Guttmann promoted.
1st Sergt. Lambert Weiss as 1st Lieut Co. G vice Vollmer deceased
(died of wounds received in battle of Peach Tree Creek, July 20, 1864).
