Lt. Col. F.C. Winkler
Comd'g. 26th Wisc. Vols.
Colonel:
I have the honor to forward
to you an Extract from the Official Report of Col. Wood, Camd't the Brig.
of the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, July 20, 1864.
Where all behaved well
it may be regarded as wondrous to call attention to individuals. Yet it
seems to me that I cannot discharge my whole duty in this report without
pointing out for a special commendation the conduct of the 26th Wis. V.I.
and its brave and able commander. The position of this Regt. in the line
was such, that the brunt of the attack on this Brigade fell upon it. The
brave, skillful and determinate manner in which it met this attack, rolled
back the onset and pressed forward in a counter charge and drove back the
enemy, could not be excelled by the troops in this or any other army and
is worthy of the highest commendation and praise. It is to be hoped that
such conduct will be held up as an example for others and will meet is
appropriate reward.
I am (?)
Very Respt. Your Obt. Svt.
